The building dates back to 1000 AD, and was once dedicated to Sacro Cuore to host the Jesuits Order in the second half of the 19th century.

Nevertheless, the church was transformed at the beginning of the 19th century into “Romagnosi” theatre, of which only a few drawings remain because it was destroyed when the building was re-consecrated by Monsignor Giovanni Battista Scalabrini. On 7th June 1896 he officiated at the ceremony to consecrate a building which “had been contaminated by profane plays”, as mentioned on the commemcorative stone written in Latin on the right wall next to the entrance.

The activity of the Society of Jesus ended in 1992 and today, after a long and intensive restoring work on the original structure with its decorations and frescoes, the building is back in the shape of a theatre. The multi-purpose large room is also a laboratory for schools and to promote theatrical activities, hosting performances throughout the year.
