Piazza Borgo

This square, now at the centre of a network of historic roads, is among the most ancient squares in the city and a witness to Piacenza medieval history. The name ‘Piazza Borgo’ originates from the word sobborgo which indicated the villages outside the city walls. These were bound to be included in the city and usually took the name of the closest porta – or entrance to the city. In the square you can see the church of S.Brigida, built on a pre-existing temple from the 850 AD, an ancient hospice for pilgrims.
