Itineraries: Piacenza between the 19th and 20th centuries

Piacenza, Roman colony, flourishing medieval centre, benefiting from Farnese’s splendours, first born Italian city, is characterised by a complex relationship between past and present, revolution and tradition, cosmopolitanism and parochialism. The need for modernity goes along with the recovery of what is ancient, but also leads to new buildings, expressing the new styles and the ambitions for the future. The golden age of stately mansions is followed by the age of public buildings, schools, the beginning of urban planning. The city grows outside its walls, with factories, which are witnesses of a working Piacenza and, today, interesting examples of industrial archaeology.
